Antique hand colored map of the United States, not including the western territories, drawn by J. Dower and published by Orr & Company, c. 1849. This map shows the "Western States," many of which had recently been granted statehood, and which we now consider the Midwest. Minnesota and Nebraska are "Unorganized States" and have not yet been granted statehood. Includes major cities, railroads, some topography, rivers, and bodies of water. At bottom are diagrams showing the height above sea level for a section of the "Alleghanny" Mountains (Allegheny Mountains). Very good condition with a few tiny spots, 10 x 8.25 inches.
