Genuine Antique Map
1797
Maker: Bradley / Morse
Antique map of the north east part of the United States by Abraham Bradley, Jr., published in Morse's American Gazetteer in 1797. B. Callender sculpt. This map was created a mere 14 years after the end of the Revolutionary War, depicting the country in its infancy. It covers the region from the District of Maine south to Virginia and Kentucky (labeled Kentuckey), and westward to just beyond the Mississippi River. West of the Mississippi a note reads "Re Lands Reserved by the U.S." In the western frontier are Large Meadows…, Coal Mines, and Very Large Meadows. St. Louis is located by a tiny dot. A Great Cave is located just west of Kentucky near the Ohio River. Lines show the "Indian Boundary" and "Gen. Wayne's Treaty 1795" line. Beyond this line numerous reservations are located including Chicago. The Western Reserve is here called New Connecticut. Five proposed new states are indicated with Roman numerals, which match closely Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. This is the first edition of Bradley's map. Some of the notations on the map remain a mystery to us- in the western half of the map are many tiny squares marked Re, including at the location of Chicago, which was an important trading place for Native American Indians, so perhaps this notation indicates something related to that. Forts also pepper the western part of the map. In Virginia some cities or towns are marked with a CH (Court House). Fair to good restored condition- this map has been professionally archivally cleaned, repaired, and backed, but retains some lingering stains. Mild wear along folds where it was folded in the book. Lower left margin infilled. Measures approx. 8.5 x 15.75 inches to the outer border line.
