From the "Universal Atlas" of master cartographer Henry Schenck Tanner, hand colored engraved antique map of the West Indies in the mid-19th century, with countries or territories delineated by color, and a key , "Possessions of the European Powers," listing which islands were under the jurisdiction of the British, French, Spanish, Dutch, Danish or Swedish, with the notation, "The Island of Hayti is now an Independent Republic."
