Antique uncolored maps, the title of which translates to "Map which represents the different knowledge we had of the Arctic Lands from 1650 until 1747 to which we must compare the following map c. 10 By M. de Vaugondy 1773." This is from Diderot €™s encyclopedia and includes four representations of older maps. Diderot €™s maps were one of the first surveys of comparative cartography, tackling a number of the early misconceptions of the west coast of North America and the Northeastern Asian Coastline. These maps each show the area of Hudson Bay and Baffin Bay as depicted by different map makers of different eras. Good restored condition with some image transfer. Has been archivally cleaned and backed. Measures approx. 12 x 15 inches to the neatline.
